Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of an octagon quartered Argent and Purpure overall a two headed phoenix Tenn.  Attached below is a Purple scroll inscribed "DE LUCE AC UMBRA" in Silver letters.

Symbolism
Purple and white are the branch colors.  Purple signifies loyalty and patience.  White signifies the five virtues of humility, beauty, purity, clarity and innocence.  The eight sided octagon, quartered suggests the unit's numerical designation and the dual political-military mission of Civil Affairs.  The phoenix represents renewal, regeneration and new beginnings as well as representing the fourth cadency within the 85th Civil Affairs Brigade.  The two headed phoenix symbolizes the dual political-military mission of Civil Affairs.   Orange represents worthy ambition.  The motto translates to "Of Light and Shadow."

The distinctive unit insignia was approved effective 17 September 2013.

Purple and white are the branch colors.  Purple signifies loyalty and patience.  White signifies the five virtues of humility, beauty, purity, clarity and innocence.  Lineage of the Battalion is derived from the 42d Civil Affairs Company with campaign credit in the Dominican Republic during Operation Powerpack.  The panther signifies the supported Brigade from the 82d Airborne Division during Operation Powerpack.  The palm fronds signify the Dominican Republic theater of operations for the Operation Powerpack.  Black signifies constancy, while green signifies honor.
